In the 1970's I lived in St. Louis and was quite a "regular" at Ms. Hullings. Her food was excellent and her pastries were superb and these folks at Straubs have managed to perfectly copy what Ms. Hullings provided! You will NOT be disappointed!

My family enjoyed the cakes for Mother's Day and we all were transported back to our younger days in St. Louis. The only thing we all noticed is that the lemon filling and the icing didn't have as much lemon flavor as the ones from the Miss Hullings Bakery. Thanks for making this cake available to us!

I saw a movie at Chase Park Plaza cinema and stop at Straub's Fine Grocers to browse. I was pleasantly surprised to see Miss Hulling's Split Lemon Cake and bought a slice. At the first bite, I was flooded with memories of visiting Miss Hulling's in downtown Saint Louis and as slice of Miss Hulling's cake was a treat. The lemony layers and texture of the cake was heavenly. Miss Hulling's Split Lemon cake continues to be made with the finest ingredients. Next time, I will treat myself to a whole cake.
Decadent cake

My sister reminded me of the cakes being sold at Straub's. I asked her to purchase me the cake (which is my favorite) for my birthday last week. She froze it and niece brought it back to me. The cake was super moist but the only thing was it did not have the lemony taste I was remembering. It mostly tasted like a vanilla cake. I will give it a try again when I return home in May.
Better than Smith Island Cakes

The only other multiple layer cakes that are similar are the Smith Island Cakes from Maryland. However, they do not compare to a Miss Hullings layer cake. Each layer of a Miss Hullings Cake complements the other leaving a rich bountiful taste like no other. Also, the Smith Island Cakes have additional layers, sometimes with too many layers the frosting overwhelms the cake. This will never happen with Miss Hullings cakes, they are the best, anywhere.
Just Like I remember

These cakes are amazing and were a staple while I was growing up. They were available at the restaurants in downtown St. Louis after a long day of shoppinf at Famous-Barr just around the corner. I really love the fact that this wonderful and tasty past of our family past has been preserved and is every bit as tasty as I remember.

Miss Hullings Recipe Change?

It is still delicious, and a guilty pleasure. I did search to find out how the recipe changed tho, and I'm glad to see another reviewer noticed the same thing. The icing is definitely different. Before it would harden up in the fridge; now it stays soft. Also tastes like no lemon in the icing.
It's still a wonderful dessert and signature STL delight.
4 stars - will be 5 when icing changes back :-)
Delicious and Delivered On Time

The Miss Hullings split layered lemon cake has been a favorite of mine since childhood in St. Louis. When ever I'm "home" be it a holiday, celebration or even a funeral, I always have to have a split lemon cake. I had this delivered to Oklahoma City in time for Easter. It was a delight, it came on time and was perfect in every way. You have done a great job coordinating shipment with FEDEX and packaging the cake so that it doesn't incur any damage. It brought back wonderful memories. Thank you Straub's.

My parents moved away from St. Louis 20 years ago. My mom loved the lemon split layer cake when she lived here so it was the perfect cake to send her for her 80th birthday. She said it came packaged very well and tasted perfect. I will be sending this again in the future, I'm sure!

This has been my favorite cake for 50 years. I now live on the east coast but when I come home to the St Louis area, my mom always has one for me. Love this cake! However, has the frosting recipe been changed? This time, the frosting was yellow in color, and it was more of a creamy lemon. It was good, but the original frosting recipe was much better. Please bring back the original recipe!!!

I consider eating one of my favorite hobbies. Can't put into words how good these lemony slices of heaven on Earth are. We have a lot of superb bakers in my family, even an aunt who has a cake baking business. However, these cakes are hands-down better than anything my aunt has ever made. PLEEEEEASE don't tell her! But yes, these cakes are frickin awesome. So glad I googled them because I didn't know Miss Hulling's cakes were still around. Definitely going to order one for Christmas. Merry Christmas to me!!!!
