When I moved out east I was told of the Smith Island Cake with its multiple layers. When I tried one it was good but the many many layers were a bit excessive, the cake gets lost in the icing. I reminded everyone in Maryland that St. Louis had Miss Hullings split layer cakes that weren't as intensively layered and were a better balance of cake to icing layer. Then I discovered you could order them from Straub's and had several sent out for comparison. Needless to say Miss Hullings beats out the Smith Island Cake above and beyond.

The cake was delicious and reminded the attorney I bought it for his birthday of his childhood. Because the cake had been tossed around like trash, the next day shipping parcel was terrible. However, I liked how Straub's packaged it, and I will be able to use the small cooler for my son's soccer games. It was delicious, and when I brought a slice home to my kids, they said the attorney I work for should have birthdays every day. Hopefully, they can contact the shipping company and request that the "fragile" sticker on the side of the box be adhered to.

The cakes came just as you describe; it does not travel well. It looked terrible...I wish the travel process could be improved...I would love to buy for holidays, but I want to receive them as beautiful as they taste!

We were watching The British Baking show making multi-layered cakes which reminded me of Mrs Hullings cakes. They were the most delicious, moist cakes ever. Those were my childhood memories. I am 70 now and they haven't changed a bit. Was delighted to find them still available and had them shipped to CA! We and our friends had a wonderful Mrs Hullings cake party. Thanks for making the same delicious cakes I remember from my childhood!

I ordered online two Miss Hulling's chocolate split layer cakes and had them sent to my uncle in Arizona for his birthday. They got there on the date I wanted them there and were in perfect condition! My aunt is from St. Louis, and uncle worked in downtown St. Louis fir years and we're very familiar with this cake. My two cousins were there also and loved the cake they, too, were familiar with. I ordered two cakes for my aunt's birthday a couple of years ago and just repeated what I did before.

My mother bought me this cake every year for my birthday as a child. I was so happy to be able to get one shipped to me for my birthday. Obviously being shipped in July it isn't as pretty but it tastes great.

I've eaten this cake since I was a child. I send one to my mother for her birthday and she loved it. I've never had a better chocolate cake in my life. By some miracle Straub's still makes this iconic cake.

This is a family tradition whenever I visit my out of town relative to bring as many Miss Hullings split layer cakes that I can carry through security. My peak carry-on was 4. When driving to K.C. 8. The cakes freeze well also if for some reason they aren't all gobbled up when 1st served.

I am a St. Louis foodie. I was taught well by my mother whom, I consider the Original Foodie. She taught my siblings and I how to be discerning in our food choices and tastes. From Chinese to Miss Hulling's. Mom would go anywhere in and around St. Louis in search of THE BEST.
At 50something THE BEST cake I have yet to taste is Miss Hulling's Split Layer Chicolate Cake. It is a moist, rich, perfection of yellow cake and chocolate icing. (Or Lemon for my sister.)
I have been fighting with my mother and siblings my whole life for the prized end pieces. Only winning after my mother died and I buy them for myself.
On the rare occassions I get home Miss Hulling's Split Layer Chocolate cake is a MUST!
Last week it was a Shiva must.
Miss Hulling's Split layer is the best Dobosh Tort-like cake I have EVER had. And I consider myself a foodie. Thanks mom.
